Etsy for Mother’s Day

Considering we’re trying to cull our belongings, I’m not wanting or expecting any gifts for Mother’s Day. But I admit, I am very looking forward to croissants and coffee, handmade cards and an afternoon nap.

The not wanting a gift is a new thing for me and I admit, it’s a really nice place to be. I used to be a bit of an over-achiever when it came to spending; and all that spending was driven by so much wanting. Over a year ago, when work significantly slowed, I curbed my spending habits out of necessity and subsequently stopped looking for things to buy.

Granted, there were still things I saw that I really, really liked but instead of instantly buying them I’d step back, think about them, consider whether they were worth the money, and, in most cases, decide I didn’t need them after-all.

I think this might be conscious consumerism. Close to it, anyway.

But the necessity bit? Well, no doubt it’s a common story for many of you. Because when you’ve got a bit of spare cash, there’s usually a long list of things that are required before you buy yourself something; we do tend to come after the outgrown kids shoes, seasonal clothing necessities, school requirements etc

So when the fabulous team at Etsy reached out to see if I’d like to give away a $100 voucher, I knew that it would be perfect for one of my readers.

Because spoiling yourself on something handmade would have to be one of the best Mother’s Day gifts, don’t you think?

To enter, just tell me in the comments what you would buy with the voucher and why you want it.

Me? I think I would get myself something from NotPerfectLinen – I think this dress or maybe this simple top.

I’ll announce the winner on Sunday morning so if you do get a chance for some Etsy perusal on Mother’s Day, you can have yourself a little spending spree.

Good luck!

I really love anything from MirDinara’s store. I’d really love some of her pretty teatowels to brighten up my kitchen. https://www.etsy.com/shop/MirDinara?ref=l2-shopheader-name

I’m definitely trying to be a conscious consumer and really think about purchases in terms of what is really necessary. We are on a journey to live with less and hoping our kids will grow up to not put so much value on “things”. However, if I were to win a $100 Etsy voucher, I would probably buy some weaving supplies from Loom and Spindle so I can actually find some “me” time and put my creative energy to good use 😃

I was going to say a linen dress also…now it looks like I’m copying you. But I’ve been wanting one for so long especially since having my last baby (10 months ago) and feeling like a potato sack most days I would love to wear something feminine and pretty…it will probably get peanut butter smeared on it but them the breaks 😀

I’ve been dreaming of the NotPerfectLinen Mama dress (perfect for my winter pregnancy and spring breastfeeding) but would also love to stock up some embroidery kits and patterns from various Australian and O/S makers. But the reality could be I’d end up purchasing something for the new babe, wouldn’t I? Defeats the purpose, but mamas be mamas.

Ah, so true! I always get side-tracked my cute baby things that will be worn for a few months (and yet I can’t justify buying myself something that will last me years!) x

A new handbag. As I move from the baby/toddler stage, I no longer need to lug so much stuff. I’d love to splurge on a nicer, more compact daily accessory for myself x

I would buy some hand dyed (naturally is my favourite) wool to knit up a sweater for the fall. The wool is a gift, the process of knitting it up is a gift, and the wearing of the item is a gift!!! The gift that keeps on giving!!!! <3

I’d probably go for an embroidery or knitting kit so I can finally make something handmade for my kiddos. I always mean to but never have. I know it’s mother’s Day and I should get something for me but it fills my heart with so much not joy to give to them – seeing as they’ve given me everything I could ever really want.

I fell in love with this dress a while ago and would buy it for two reasons: first of all I’m pregnant and looking for something comfy to wear for a forthcoming wedding. but most of all it reminds me so much of my beloved mum who passed away two years ago. she was a practicing buddhist and always wore red dresses. it makes me think of her and wearing a red dress somehow always feels as if she was hugging me again.
    love from Germany.

i’m consuming way less then i used to, as my kids get older they are so much more expensive and i’m so much more aware and protective about where the money gets spent. i would pick something for my home. Probably an art print or two, something that will last and also help support an artist.

    Ooh … the choices Jodi!
I have been working very hard to buy fewer things of better quality over the last year or so.
But I recently broke my engagement ring. So I would put the voucher towards a new ring I have my eye on.
Although Emily Peacock’s counted cross stitch kits are always beckoning too: hours of cathartic creativity.

I would LOVE to win this!! I have a big list of favourites saved on Etsy… antique bits and bobs for the house, artwork etc but I am actually an ‘underbuyer’… I think purchases over so much that I never end up buying anything (or it is sold when I finish procrastinating and go to add it to my cart). I would love to treat myself to something for once without feeling guilty for being ‘indulgent’ and buying a ‘want’ as opposed to a ‘need’.

Since this is my second Mother’s day (the first with a baby just some days old) I was looking for a necklace or a pendant custom-made with the name of my baby as a treat for myself. Or a lovely summer skirt.

There are definitely beautiful linen dresses on Etsy, just like some beautiful jewelry I’ve been eyeing for a while. However, I think I’d split the voucher in a half, so my own mother could pick something she likes. She’s currently at the hospital and will be until past mother’s day, so this would be the perfect pick me up (since I didn’t get around to pick anything for her due to the chaos of it all) ❤

I know the card isn’t just for NotPerfectLinen, but I’d get a pair of linen pants from them. I’ve developed varicose veins on my legs and don’t like to show them off anymore. But it gets stinking hot here in the summer. I’m hoping linen pants would allow me to stay covered up, yet cool.

I have a very hard time spending money on myself. But for Mother’s day I’d like to buy myself something to remember my three children in Heaven. I’ve seen beautiful custom necklaces with birth stones of children, and I would probably go for one of those. One sapphire and two rubies, to keep my little babes close to my heart.

After my last pregnancy, my feet grew. I really need new shoes because I can’t wear sandals in winter! Also, my bag broke recently and I haven’t replaced it. I bought it before I was first pregnant close to six years ago. Plus, my hairbrush is really on its last legs. However, beingme means I’ll buy things for my kids before I buy for me. So, I’ve been wearing too small shoes, carrying my things in a backpack and grimacing each time I brush my hair. If I won the $100 Etsy voucher I’d probably browse through the Australian leather bag designers and after much deliberation choose one that’s just the right size

I know these sentiments well! I’ve actually found the practice of writing out or drawing a picture of my wants (say beautiful books or clothes or fabric) helps somehow with lessening the hold of the desire for them and I can get record to look back on / how often time passes and we no longer think we need/want those things so much! If I was to buy something from Etsy it would either be some beautiful Japanese linen to sew myself a set of luxurious pillow cases or a set of silk underwear / i’ve finally weaned by last babe and realise all my underwear is faded, I’ll-fitting and not terribly flattering! Thanks Jodi xx

So many women deserving this voucher! There are so many things I’d love, and when the kids are in bed tonight I’m going to go through these comments and bookmark some of your Etsy finds! But if I won the voucher, I’d start off by buying a couple of pairs of earrings – perhaps some large gold discs? My skin is all over the shop these days and I haven’t bought new clothes in many moons, and most mornings I wake up looking like I’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards. A pair of earrings improves this look somewhat.

This resonates with me- although I’m yet to have the discipline to follow through with the idea of sitting with something and pondering if my ‘need’ is a need or want. I’m a slave to my ever evolving shopping list!
Having said that I would really love a new pair of pjs. My current selection are too small and include various old t-shirts and pants that seemed to have shrunk over the years. Not essential but it would be lovely to keep my squishy bits warm and Etsy does have some homemade loveliness that would tickle the ‘want’ list nicely.
Ps promise to not spend the voucher on my kids (I’m sure every mother will understand this ‘need’!)
